In commemoration of Veteran’s Day and to honor Hawaii’s Veterans, Hawaiian Days proudly presents the release of PATRIOTIC SLACK KEY & STEEL, Hawaii’s 21 Song Salute to America by the Friends Of Aloha.

Several local artists released projects in direct response to 9/11, but none were more ambitious or substantial than this beautifully packaged collection of 20 patriotic melodies performed primarily on slack-key and steel guitar.

This CD is a generous collection of twenty-one of America’s most popular patriotic themes, anthems and marches – all done Hawaiian Style! Heart-warming slack key, soothing steel guitar, lively ukulele and native Hawaiian percussion combine beautifully to create a whole new sound.
The Friends Of Aloha are homegrown musicians that consist of a teacher, a police sergeant, an agricultural worker and a surfer, who came together to express their love for this Country through the music they love to share. The arrangements are relatively simple but sweet and soothing. The opening track, “To The Colors”, is the symbolic raising of our flag, slack key & steel guitar with ukulele beautifully played over the sounds of Hawaiian surf. “Stars and Stripes Forever” is a definite highlight, with an exciting rhythm section of ipu, pu’ili (split bamboo rattle), kala’au (wooden sticks), ‘uli’uli (gourd rattles), and marching drums. The other musical offerings reflect a wide range of emotions – from the powerful “America” to the nostalgic “Yankee Doodle” to the foot-tapping slack key version of “You’re A Grand Old Flag” and ending perfectly with the traditional Hawaiian farewell “Aloha ‘Oe” – a bit of an odd choice sybolically, not musically, because its composer, Queen Lili'uokalani, was overthrown in 1893 with the support of America's representatives in the Hawaiian islands. That noted, this new release is a gem!
